The Granada Hills Rocketry Group represents the city of Granada Hills in rocketry competitions and programs for youth students. Our mission is to establish a culture within the community that is interested in rocketry, space exploration, and Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). To do so, we believe in setting the foundation for students in Granada Hills who are interested in rocketry and space exploration to find a space to explore and grow as individuals in the fields of STEM. Currently, we our team is participating in The American Rocketry Challenge (TARC), the world's largest rocketry contest.
Our story started when a group of students from Granada Hills decided to start a team to compete in TARC 2021. It was at this point where we established our first connections with the Granada Hills community. Our sponsoring organization, American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO) Region 174, lies within Granada Hills and it was because of this incredible group that we were able to register for TARC. The team is and always will be incredibly grateful for AYSO Region 174 and the kindness and support that they have offered us. Without them, this group would never have been a possibility.
During TARC 2021, our team made the most use of the limited resources available. Thanks to the compassionate guidance by our mentor, the team was able to work on designing and eventually constructing rockets for the challenge. From meetings on Zoom during the Covid-19 pandemic, to working out of a small garage, this team built itself from the ground up. Throughout the whole process, all the way up to the test launches, this team set the foundation fo teamwork and unity that has maintained this group. The team eventually made it to the national finals, where they would place second in California and sixth in the nation out of over 600 teams nationwide.
Thanks to the great success of TARC, the team was invited by NASA to submit a proposal for their Student Launch Initiative for the 2021-2022 season, the opportunity to gain professional experience conducting research using Level 2 High Power rockets. Our team proposed to develop a scientific payload that researched the sustainability of a given environment via collecting important information from the atmosphere. In addition, a great part of the Student Launch program is community engagement and STEM outreach, which our group accomplished through our events and other forms of connection to the greater Granada Hills community. All throughout, our team has grown and has brought more diverse minds to the grandeur of space exploration and rocketry and be a part of this inspiring journey for all of mankind.
